Mango bango is sunshine you can drink: ripe mangoes blended with orange juice, honey, a drop of vanilla and plenty of ice into something between a smoothie and a tropical vacation.

It takes ten minutes, one blender, and exactly zero skill — which makes it the perfect answer to a heat wave, a mango glut, or a kid demanding “something special” with lunch.

It is naturally vegan-friendly (swap the honey for agave) and endlessly tweakable — see the notes for the coconut, lime and grown-up variations.

Mango Bango Recipe

Prep time: 10 minutes · Cook time: no cooking · Total: 10 minutes · Servings: 4 · Calories: ~118 per serving

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe mangoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons honey (or agave)
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Put everything in a blender and blend until smooth and frothy.
  2. Pour into glasses and enjoy immediately.

Recipe Notes

  • Lime juice or zest adds a tangy edge.
  • Frozen mango instead of ice makes it thicker and creamier.
  • Coconut milk or yogurt turns it into a richer smoothie.
  • A splash of rum or vodka makes it a very good party drink.

Hi, I’m Maria — born in a small village in northern Portugal and now cooking from my kitchen in the USA, where I live with my husband, our two kids and Max the dog. On Maria’s Cookbook I share the recipes I grew up with — from my Trás-os-Montes family table to my grandmother’s Azorean kitchen — along with Mediterranean favorites and dishes I’ve fallen in love with along the way.
