Bolo de família is exactly what its name promises: the everyday family version of Madeira’s grand Christmas fruit cakes. It is lighter than bolo preto and less intense than bolo de mel, which makes it the cake people keep cutting long after Christmas lunch is over.

Raisins, nuts, citrus, and Madeira wine give it holiday flavor without turning it into a brick. It is especially good with coffee the next morning.
